Frigid Temperatures Lead to High Bills

Article published on Monday, January 03, 2011

December's frigid temperatures caused a record peak demand for consumers served by South Carolina's member-owned electric cooperatives and the state-owned utility Santee-Cooper.

A new peak record of 5,743 megawatts was reported on the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 14. The system's previous peak demand of 5,668 MWs was set during January's cold spell on January 11, 2010.

The peak occurred between 7 and 8 a.m. The combination of a morning tempearture in the teens, heating systems working harder to maintain comfort and busy consumers preparing for work and school will likely lead to higher electric bills in December and January.

Heating and cooling represent about 50 percent of a typical home's energy use. When the outside temperature is less than the preferred indoor temperature, heating systems will come on more often and generally run for longer periods. The result is a higher bill.

The bills for most members will also include the Christmas holidays when families do more cooking, laundry and entertaining. The additional energy use may increase bills even more.
