Students Learn How Sunshine Creates EnergyArticle published on Tuesday, September 30, 2008
Students at Chesterfield-Ruby Middle School can now learn how the sun creates solar energy with the installation of a 2-kilowatt solar power system at the school. Each school program is supplemented by an Internet-based monitoring system providing real-time access to information on the systems performance. The project uses a new renewable energy curriculum designed especially for the program. The curriculum meets South Carolina Department of Education science standards. The GreenPower Solar School initiative is designed to encourage interest in the environment and demonstrate the feasibility and limitations of renewable power generation. GreenPower Solar Schools was launched in 2006 as a partnership between Santee Cooper and The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc. The project will continue through 2010 and include 18 solar schools.
