Article published on Friday, January 29, 2010

Lynches River Electric Cooperative will award an expense-paid week in Washington, D.C. to two high school juniors. This year's tour is June 12-17.

Applications for the tour are available at the Lynches River Electric Cooperative office, on the co-op's web site and from high school guidance counselors in Lynches River's service area. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, Feb. 19.

Finalist will be selected to appear for interviews with a committee of judges. At the time of the interview, they will take a short test on their knowledge of electric cooperatives.

As participants on the tour, winners will travel to Washington for six days of non-stop activities. Students will meet with their Congressmen, visit historic sites, learn about cooperatives and meet youth from across the country. Additional activities may include a cruise on the Potomac River, a play at the Kennedy Center, a shopping trip at Union Station and a tour of Mt. Vernon.

Youth tour winners are eligible to compete for a $2,500 college scholarship awarded to one South Carolina tour participant by The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc.
