LREC goes the extra mile to serve

Did you know? Lynches River Electric Cooperative maintains more power lines per consumer than other types of electric utilities. Based on national averages, investor-owned and municipal utilities deliver power to more than 32 customers per mile. By contrast, LREC delivers to just 7.2 customers per mile.

Such a contrast means LREC invests more per meter than neighboring power companies. In 2024, the operating expenses for each member averaged $221.04 per month. That figure not only factors in all the poles, wires and equipment, it also represents the lineworkers who are building, maintaining and restoring those lines—often over rough, challenging terrain in rural areas.

“The members at the end of our lines are just as much a priority as the ones near a substation,” says Lynches River CEO Brian Broughton. “When we invest in upgrades to our system or build new infrastructure, we’re thinking about those members and making sure they are receiving the same reliable service as everyone else.”
